At Cal Poly, we believe that collaboration between students and industry professionals is key to preparing the next generation of engineers and designers. That’s why we are so grateful for our partnership with DCI Engineering, whose recent guest lecture on structural design and framing systems in mass timber provided an invaluable learning experience for our students.

A Deep Dive into Structural Design

DCI Engineering delivered an incredibly informative session that focused on the critical aspects of selecting framing systems for mass timber buildings based on building type. The session wasn’t just a lecture—it was a hands-on learning experience that allowed students to engage with real-world applications of mass timber design.

Through two interactive in-class activities, students had the opportunity to explore different framing options and develop a deeper understanding of how these systems function in practice. This session wasn’t just about technical knowledge—it was also about building collaboration skills, as students from different majors and disciplines worked together to solve design challenges. This interdisciplinary approach reflects the reality of the industry, where architects, engineers, and construction professionals must work closely to bring sustainable projects to life.

Mentorship and Industry Guidance

We were fortunate to have the excellent mentoring of Nina and Michael, whose guidance and expertise provided students with deeper insights into the complexities of structural design. Their mentorship helped bridge the gap between theoretical learning and real-world application, making the session both engaging and practical.

Strengthening Industry Connections

This collaboration with DCI Engineering is part of a broader effort to integrate industry expertise into our curriculum and ensure that students graduate with the skills and connections needed for success. By learning from professionals actively working in the field, students gain perspectives that are critical for their development as future industry leaders.

Looking Forward

The study of mass timber is an exciting and evolving field, and our partnership with DCI Engineering is helping us stay at the forefront of innovation. This guest lecture was just one of many steps toward advancing mass timber education at Cal Poly, and we look forward to continued collaboration with DCI Engineering to further explore sustainable building solutions.

A special thank you to [Names] for making the trip to Cal Poly and to DCI Engineering for their commitment to education, mentorship, and innovation in mass timber design.
